Aquarium of the Bay

Aquarium of the Bay is located at the iconic Pier 39 next to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. The Marine Nature Center here features 300 feet of crystal clear acrylic tunnels holding 700,000 gallons of Bay water that sustains about 20,000 animals who live in the Bay and nearby waters, from octopuses to eight-foot sevengill sharks. Imagine walking through the tunnels with a perfect, up-close view of leopard sharks, bat rays and jelly fish. As a non-profit organization and a Certified Green Business, you can be assured your visit contributes to the protection and restoration of local marine life and the San Francisco Bay.

The layout features three main habitat areas focusing on the diversity and richness of life beneath the surface of the waters. These areas are called Discover the Bay, Under the Bay, and Touch the Bay. As you Discover the Bay, you will notice eight distinct animal habitats, home to over a thousand aquatic creatures. You’ll see “beauties of the bay,” SF’s most colorful animals including bright orange Garibaldi, green Moray eels, and rockfish of varying colors. Swirling schools of anchovies can mesmerize, and kids will be delighted to see the Bay babies, newly hatched Skates and other underwater newborns.

Under the Bay includes the two tunnels, one featuring near-shore sea life including Giant Sea Bass and colorful Sea Stars while the second one has deep sea life, including the sharks. After seeing all the San Francisco Bay inhabitants you’ll have fun actually touching many of them! Touch Bat Rays on the tip of their wings and they may pop their heads out of the water to take a look at you, especially in the morning hours. You can also touch a variety of sharks and Skates, those odd-looking creatures with the disc shaped, flattened bodies. Explorers of all ages can enjoy the telescopes, puzzles and other touchables and find out why there are some land dwellers also in residence at the Aquarium!
