As the chill of winter subsides, the earth blossoms in many colors, shapes, and forms. Similarly, to nature’s perennial reveal, In Bloom uncovers a fresh introduction to Spring. This vibrant display offers unique explorations of rebirth, identity, abstraction, humanity, and forces that move us to collective change. Cultivating a garden of metamorphosis, this exhibition presents a diverse array of artists whose perspectives are materialized through painting, sculpture, and photography. With flowing, textured strokes, Earl Biss’ Charging Through a Rainbow Storm (1997) brings a beautiful windy panorama of Plains Apsáalooke Nation horsemen alive in the imagination. Comprised of 21 round discs on a golden backdrop, Yinka Shonibare CBE’s large-scale Bling Painting (2013) flowers with miniature representations of decadence. ‘The Flower Prince’ (2018) by Martine Gutierrez depicts a personification of Xochipilli, a benevolent Aztec deity of excesses and fertility associated with feasting, flowers, and pleasure. In a fit of whimsy, Salvador Dalí’s bronze Alice in Wonderland (1977-1984) stands frozen with arms stretched to the sky as she brings about her next round of jump rope. Together, these works challenge our conventional understandings of seasonal change, giving space for new narratives to bloom.
