Flamingo Gardens

Gardens galore, a wildlife sanctuary, a museum, a tram tour, and wildlife encounters all combine to bring you a marvelous day of discovery at the Flamingo Gardens. With dining and shopping options as well, there is enough here to keep you and your family happily occupied for several hours. Learn about the Wray family who originally founded the gardens as a citrus grove in 1927 and welcomed the public to see the flamingos, groves, and fruit shipping areas.

The Botanical Gardens feature native and exotic trees, ponds, a waterfall, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, and tropical fruit trees. A delightful specialized children’s garden is located behind the gallery, with plants for touching and smelling. Wander through the wildflower garden, and check out the xeriscape garden that demonstrates how to choose native plants for landscaping which don’t require irrigation.

The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Elvis and Priscilla, residents of the Alligator Lagoon, as well as Josh the Black Bear, weighing in at 600 pounds. You will also see panthers and bobcats, otters, birds of prey, turtles and tortoises, storks, cranes, parrots, and of course the lovely Caribbean flamingos.

Climb aboard the tram for a tour through 42 remote acres to see some of the last original jungle growth in South Florida and travel through a unique native hammock of 200-year-old Live Oaks and a tropical rainforest. Disembark for a while at the Pioneer or Wetland Walkways, then resume your tour back to the station.

The Wray Museum is the original Wray family home and will give you a peak into the past to see what daily life was like in 1930. Take in a Wildlife Encounter Show at the outdoor amphitheater before getting a bite to eat at the Flamingo Café or Garden Grill.
