Fort Mifflin - General Admission

See the genuine Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River, a real piece of history that is sometimes overlooked in the hustle of seeing the city locations. The physical and architectural preservation reflects the period 1777 – 1875. This fort serviced all of America’s major wars – Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I and World War II. You are free to wander around the area on your self-guided tour. Several buildings are open for exploration, including the soldier’s barracks, the blacksmith shop, the powder magazine, and the artillery shed. Located near the airport, planes will be flying overhead regularly, which adds to the authentic feel of the fort.

Wander through the casemates (often called casements,) the fortified chambers or vaults from where the guns were fired. Bring a flashlight if you like because some of the areas are dark, even creepy, which is why the site is also used for ghost huntings! Wander through tunnels and imagine the early days of the nation, when people were still fighting for independence. Follow the history of the place that is called “the fort that saved America.” In 1777 the men at Fort Mifflin prevented the British from sailing up the Delaware long enough for Washington to get his army to Valley Forge.

Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grounds overlooking the river.

*Please Note: Fort Mifflin has a soft close from 12/15 to 3/1 - open by chance or appointment
