History and Beer Adventure (Fri, Sat & Sun)

The people behind the History and Beer Adventure tour have caught onto something that simply can’t be denied: beer makes a lot of things better...including history! On this two-hour tour by pedicycle, Big Red Pedal’s 15-seat passenger-powered tour “bus”, you’ll see some of the city’s most historic attractions and visit two historically themed pubs.

Start at Silence Dogood’s Tavern, named after Benjamin Franklin's alias back when the future Founding Father was an apprentice at the New-England Courant. Try one of Ben’s Hot Toddies or a Silence Cider, taking advantage of special deals just for Big Red Pedal passengers. Your knowledgeable guide will fill you in on the tavern’s storied past before ushering you on to the next haunt.

Pedal your way around town as your guide and driver takes the wheel. Your open-air, covered pedicycle also has a great sound system with a connection for your iPhone or iPod, so come prepared with your own music or listen to your guide’s favorite party playlist.

Your next stop is McGillin’s Olde Ale House, Philadelphia’s oldest continuously operating pub! As you drink a brew or two, learn about “Ma” McGillin’s list of troublemakers who were prohibited from entering and discover what’s kept this bar in business for more than 150 years.

A century ago, Philly was known as the greatest brewing city in the Western Hemisphere. At the time of the Revolutionary War, the city had more taverns than anywhere in the English-speaking world. Be part of Philadelphia’s revitalized brewing scene on this fun and unique tour.

Departure Location: Silence Dogood's Tavern, 216 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Hours: Times vary by day. Reservations required.
