San Francisco

California Academy of Sciences - Admission Only

Due to concern regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Academy will be closed to the public beginning March 12

Enjoy a day of exploration at an Aquarium, Planetarium, and Natural History Museum all under one living roof in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Here is a building bursting with life, from the splashing penguins to the wildflowers on the rooftop. Immersive planetarium shows and a four-story living rainforest assure that there is plenty to keep everyone busy, entertained, and learning at once.

The Steinhart Aquarium is one of the most biologically diverse in the world and is home to the deepest living coral reef, an albino alligator, penguins, a shark lagoon, and more than 38,000 animals. At the Planetarium you will feel as though you are in outer space yourself, under one of the largest all-digital domes in the world. Award-winning shows take you to far away galaxies at the edge of the cosmos, and you’ll journey back in time to follow the asteroids and comets as they collide with earth. A team of in-house animators and engineers have assured that the experiences in the planetarium are awe-inspiring and accurate.

The Kimball Natural History Museum features majestic dioramas of African landscapes and animals, and an earthquake simulator that is a big hit with the younger crowd. An interactive exhibit includes computer stations and multimedia displays, and the Early Explorers Cave is a great play space for children up to age five. Other highlights include skeletons and the Foucault pendulum, a 235-pound brass ball attached to a steel cable demonstrating simple but impressive proof of the earth’s rotation. Everyone will be attracted to the lush rainforest with its winding path up four stories amid butterflies, birds, and Amazonian fish. Save time to visit the awesome gift shop before departure.

Location: Golden Gate Park 55 Music Concourse Dr. San Francisco, CA, 94118
Hours: Monday – Saturday: 9:30am – 5:00pm, Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm
