San Francisco

Hidden Gardens Urban Hike

A short hike with amazing views and riveting stories. This gorgeous hiking tour of San Francisco's hidden stairways is breathtaking. See vistas that most San Franciscans don't even know exist, while discovering beautiful neighborhoods that tourists rarely see. Meet your guide in front of St. Anne's Church and get to know the group a little before ascending into San Francisco's residential neighborhood, the Sunset District. Hear stories about how this area came to be and what it is known for (hint, it faces the Ocean). As you climb the hill, known by locals as Turtle Hill, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific Ocean, and Golden Gate Park! Or Fog. Literally Just Fog. Then you IMAGINE the bridge, ocean and park in your mind. Either view is actually pretty incredible as the city is known for its epic fog cover. You never know what you're gonna get! As we approach the north side of the stairway gardens we come across a variety of beautiful hidden gardens. The planting consists primarily of California natives and succulents. The SF Succulent Society donated succulents to further enhance the gardens in 2010. The CA natives were planted in part to support the endangered Green Hairstreak Butterfly so don't be surprised if you find many of these fluttering about during your hike. Be awestruck by the original set of tiled steps as they come into view. Learn about the small neighborhood collaboration that wanted to create a sea to stars themed mosaic flowing up their 163 step stairway that ended up becoming one of SF's most sought after hidden gems. Neighborhood residents started the project in 2003 in an effort to engage the neighbors in a community project to beautify Sunset Heights. The stairs lead you to Grand Park where the views of San Francisco are simply some of the best you will ever find. On a clear day you can see the entire length of Golden Gate Park as it goes from ocean to urban jungle. Amazing! Artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher created the design on 163 mosaic panels that line the steps and tile sponsorship funded a large portion of this project. You will find all sorts of unique tiles and hear the stories that go along with them on this perfect urban hiking tour. Conclude your day with a short walk into Golden Gate Park and visit some of the amazing nearby museums.
